MBC's historical  sensation "Knight Flower" is getting a lot of attention. It is in a league of its own in the competition for 2024 dramas among TV stations, and it is garnering record ratings.

The eight episodes that aired on February 3 generated a 12.6% viewership (Nielsen). Since 2020, it's been very difficult for streaming services to get double-digit live ratings for original dramas.

The ratings for "Knight Flower" have been rising episode after episode. In episode 8, the ratings peaked (14.9% Nielsen) when it was revealed that father-in-law Seok Ji Sung (played by Kim Sang Joong) was involved in the murder of Yeo Hwa's brother.

"Knight Flower" is the highest-rated drama currently airing, ahead of JTBC's "Dr. Slump" and TVN "Marry My Husband" The drama is also available in the U.S. and Americas on Kocowa(www.kocowa.com)

[Romance, mystery, and comedy]

The Korean title of “Knight Flower” is “Flowers that bloom at night”. As the title suggests, the drama follows a woman whose days and nights are different.

The drama "Knight Flower" is set in the Joseon Dynasty. It's a fictionalized historical drama about Jo Yeo-hwa (Lee Hae-pyun), a widow whose husband died suddenly on their first day of marriage. Jo Yeo-hwa wears a mask every night and travels around Hanyang (the capital of Joseon) to punish the wicked and help the poor.

This drama is also based on a webtoon that was serialized on KakaoPage in August 2023. Webtoons have become the source material for many K-dramas in recent years.  

The secret to the popularity of "Knight Flower" is that it closely follows the K-drama formula.  It combines the genres of romance, mystery, and comedy. The intersection of the main genre (mystery) and the subgenre (comedy) adds to the fun of the drama.

"Knight Flower" depicts a romance between the main character Yeo-hwa and Park Soo-ho (Lee Jong-won), a Geum Wee-young worker(Officer, which protect the King in Joseon Dynasty), but the comedic elements are not lost in the dialog between the two.

The story begins with Yeo-hwa's journey to find her long-lost older brother.  His disappearance is linked to the mystery of a king who died 15 years ago. She transforms into Zorro, a maiden who punishes the wicked at night, but she also becomes a detective who follows her brother's death.

Audiences can't help but be immersed in the mystery that Yeohwa solves. Of course, there's also comedy in the lines she utters from moment to moment.  The subtitles are just as charming (Kokowa's subtitle translations are among the best in the world).

"Kight Flower" is a fictionalized historical drama, but not all the plot points are made up. It depicts the life of a Joseon Dynasty widow (or widower) who had to live alone for the rest of her life because her husband died.

Although it is not a traditional historical drama, it also shows the plight of women in that era who were powerless against absolute power. There is something cathartic about Yeo-hwa's life as she fought against the power to overcome it.

The drama is highlighted by Lee Ha Nee's outstanding performance as the main character, Yeo Hwa. She was also known to the global market through “열혈사제(The Fiery Priest)”. She also appeared in  "파스타(Pasta)”

She delivers impressive scenes every time. In episode 4, Yeo-hwa dresses up as a man to save the kidnapped children and orders a drink at the bar she infiltrates, only to black out from the taste of alcohol. Her comical drunkenness was enough to keep viewers glued to the screen. Not to mention the ratings spike.

Tae-yu Jang, who directed the drama, also praised Lee's performance. "Her facial expressions are both humorous and serious. She's also good at embarrassing herself," Jang said, emphasizing that her ability to move freely between different emotions is remarkable.

Director Jang also adds insight into the evolving relationship between Yeo-hwa and Soo-ho, stating, "As Yeo-hwa's actions push boundaries and Soo-ho's concern transforms into 'love,' the unfolding dynamics promise an engaging story."

The narrative skillfully expands beyond the romantic plotlines, delving into Yeo-hwa's quest to confront societal injustices, offering viewers a captivating blend of entertainment and social commentary.

The drama is planned for 12 episodes. "It will be very interesting to see how Yeo-hwa's good deeds gradually cross the line into danger and how Su-ho's feelings for Yeo-hwa change into love," Jang told Korean media (the drama has aired eight episodes as of February 6)

In the words of writer Lee Saem, "The scattered fragments of the unfolding events will coalesce into a riveting turning point,” having “significant repercussions for Yeo-hwa and Soo-ho, injecting excitement and tension into the storyline."

These insights, coupled with the intricate subplots interwoven throughout the drama, create an engaging viewing experience that goes beyond the surface, inviting audiences to explore the deeper layers of the narrative behind just the comedy.

K드라마의 정수, 뜨거운 관심, 뜨거운 시청률 “Knight Flower”(The essence of K-drama, hot interest, and high ratings "Knight Flower")

MBC 사극 드라마 "밤에 피는 꽃(Knight Flower)"이  뜨거운 관심을 받고 있다. 방송사 간 2024년 드라마의 경쟁에서 독보적인 위치에 서며 기록적 시청률을 기록하고 있다.

2024년 2월 3일 방영된 8회의 경우 12.6%의 시청률(닐슨)을 기록해 큰 화제를 모았다. 2020년 이후 스트리밍 서비스들이 잇달아 오리지널 드라마를 내놓으면서 두 자릿수 실시간 시청률을 얻는 것은 매우 어렵다.

“밤에 피는 꽃”의 시청률은 회(episode)를 거듭할 수록 상승하고 있다. 8회에서는 시아버지 석지성(김상중)이 여화의 오빠 살인에 연루된 사실이 밝혀지면서 시청률이 피크(14.9% 닐슨)를 찍었다.

“밤에 피는 꽃”은 현재 방영 중인 드라마 중 가장 높은 시청률을 기록하며 JTBC의 “닥터 슬럼프”와 tvN의 “내 남편과 결혼해줘”와 경쟁에서 앞섰다. 이 드라마는 미국 등 글로벌 지역에서도 코코와(www.kocowa.com)에서 시청할 수 있다.

[로맨스, 미스터리, 그리고 코미디]

드라마 "밤에 피는 꽃"은 조선시대가 배경이다. 결혼 첫날 얼굴도 못 본 남편이 갑자기 사망하면서 미망인이 된 주인공 조여화(이하늬)이 등장하는 가상 역사극이다. 조영화는 밤마다 복면을 쓴 채 한양(조선 수도) 곳곳을 누비며 악인을 응징하고 불쌍한 사람을 돕는다. 이 드라마 역시  2023년 8월에 카카오페이지에서 연재된 웹툰(Webtoon)이 원작이다. 웹툰은 최근 많은 K드라마의 원전이 되고 있다.  

“밤에 피는 꽃”의 인기 비결은 K드라마의 공식을 철저히 따른다는 점이다.  이 드라마에는 로맨스, 미스터리, 코미디 장르가 모두 담겨있다. 메인 장르(미스터리)와 서브 장르(코미디)가 교차하면서 드라마의 재미를 더한다.  "밤에 피는 꽃"은 주인공 여화와 금위영 종사관인 박수호(이종원) 사이 로맨스를 그리지만, 둘 간의 대화에서 코미디 요소를 잃지 않는다.

이야기는 사라진 오빠를 찾는 여화의 여정에서 시작한다.  오빠의 실종은 15년 전 죽은 왕의 미스터리와 연관되어 있다. 밤마다 악인을 응징하는 쾌걸 조로로 변신하지만 동시에 그녀는 오빠의 죽을 따라가는 탐정이 된다. 시청자들은 여화가 풀어가는 미스터리에 몰입할 수 밖에 없다.

물론 그녀가 순간순간 내뱉는 대사에선 ‘코미디’가 담겼다.  자막으로도 “밤에 피는 꽃”의 매력은 충분히 확인할 수 있다.(코코와의 자막 번역은 글로벌 최고 수준이다)

“밤에 피는 꽃”은 가상 역사극이지만, 모든 플롯이 지어진 사실은 아니다. 남편이 죽었다는 이유로 평생 혼자 살아야 했던 조선시대 과부(여부)의 삶도 그려진다. 전통적인 사극은 아니지만, 절대적인 권력에 무력했던 그 시대 여인들의 처절한 일생도 담겼다. 이를 극복하려고 권력과 싸운 여화의 삶에서는 카타르시스를 느낄 수 있다.

드라마는 주인공 여화를 맡은 이하늬(Lee Ha Nee)의 뛰어난 연기로 더 빛이 난다. 그녀는 ‘열혈형사(The Fiery Priest)’를 통해 글로벌 시장에도 많이 알려졌다. 최근 자살로 생을 마감한 이선균의 최고작 ‘파스타(Pasta)’에도 출연했다.

그녀는 매회 인상적인 장면을 연출하고 있다. 여화는 4회에서 납치된 아이들을 구하기 위해  남장을 하고 잠입한 주막에서 술을 주문한 뒤 술맛에 빠져 정신을 못차린다. 술에 취한 그녀의 코믹한 모습은 시청자들은 화면에 잡아두기 충분했다. 순간 시청률이 급상승했음은 물론이다.

드라마를 연출한 장태유 감독도 이하늬의 연기를 극찬했다. 장 감독은 “그녀의 표정은 유머스럽지만 진지하다. 또 창피한 연기도 잘한다.”며 “다양한 감정을 사이를 자유롭게 오가는 그녀의 연기력이 놀랍다”고 강조했다.

이 드라마는 12부작으로 계획됐다. 장 감독은 한국 언론과의 인터뷰(2월 6일 기준 8회까지 방송)에서 “여화의 선행이 점점 위험 수위를 넘고 수호의 여화에 대한 마음이 연정으로 바뀌는 모습은 매우 흥미로울 것”이라고 강조했다.

드라마 작가 이샘은 “이야기의 후반은 흩어졌던 사건의 파편들이 모아지면서 극적 재미를 더한다”며  “시청자들에게는 재미와 긴장감을 동시에 선사할 것”이라고 했다.

한편, "밤에 피는 꽃(Knight Flower)"은 한국에서는 MBC, 웨이브(wavve)와 쿠팡 플레이(coupangplay)에서 시청이 가능하며, 미주 지역에서는 Kocowa에서 볼 수 있다.
