Actor Song Kang's supernatural K romance drama series "My Demon" wrapped up its 16-episode run on January 20, 2024. The drama, which gained popularity after airing on Netflix, struggled with low ratings in South Korea in contrast to its global success.

Despite favorable reviews from the media, the positive reviews did not translate into box office success. Korean audiences were turned off by the typical clichés of the K-drama genre: clichéd scenes, overacting, and cheesy humor.

There is also a strong trend that Netflix's global box office hits are going differently from its Korean popularity.

Starring Song Kang as Jung Gu-won and Kim Yoo-jung as Do Do-hee, "My Demon" unfurls a tale of a 200-year-old demon navigating an unexpected turn of events after losing his powers in an encounter with CEO Do Do Hee. Their journey unfolds into a fateful romance, intertwining their destinies in unexpected ways.‌‌

Jung Gu-won seems to be another of Song Kang’s usual mysterious and shadowy roles, but is soon revealed to be a playful yet brooding demon, revealing layers of mischief and chaos. As he crosses paths with Do Do-hee, portrayed by Kim Yoo-jung, a cold-hearted CEO, their chemistry blossoms into a mature and playful companionship.‌‌

In a press conference prior to release, Kim Yoo-jung highlighted the series' focus on the characters' growth as they comprehend and complement each other, delving deeper into the human experience and emotions. The paradoxical nature of the characters aids in their mutual evolution, creating a captivating narrative.

The series garnered acclaim at the 2023 SBS Drama Awards, receiving nine nominations and securing five wins, with Song Kang and Kim Yoo-jung taking home the Best Couple Award.‌‌

However, 'My Demon' concluded with a rather disappointing domestic viewership in the 3% range. The drama faced challenges from the start, with episode 12, released on January 6th, witnessing a decline to 2.9%. According to Nielsen Korea, the final episode recorded a viewership of 3.5%. This is approximately 1% lower than the series' own highest viewership of 4.7%, achieved on December 16.‌‌

The drama gained more strength as it neared its ending. In the week of January 8-14, 2024, it climbed to #3 on the chart, with 2.7 million views and 39.2 million watch hours. In South Korea, however, it dropped to sixth place, losing out to JTBC's "Welcome to Samdal-ri," which has been on top since December 4.

‌‌Recently, we've seen dramas that were popular internationally fail to resonate with domestic audiences. According to Parrot Analytics, "My Demon" is more popular in the Philippines than in South Korea. "My Demon" has remained in the global top 10 on Netflix. In contrast,  “Welcome to Samdal-ri” did not fare as well internationally. ‌‌

Having been a devoted follower of supernatural K-dramas like "Goblin" and "Hotel Del Luna," my anticipation for "My Demon" was palpable, and of course, how could I risk Song Kang on the big screen.‌‌

Despite some one-dimensional side characters and overlooked plot holes, Song Kang and Kim Yoo Jung's on-screen chemistry is undeniably commendable. Both leads have been criticized for being simply “eye candy” in the performance, but the duo transcends their own well-established actor personas, transforming into their characters with remarkable skill. The portrayal of religion adds an intriguing layer to the narrative, with the demon assuming an unexpected role as protagonist in contrast to a god struggling to comprehend its own creation.‌‌

The drama delves beyond its action-packed facade, exploring profound themes related to the human soul, significance of emotions and the intrinsic value of life. "My Demon" challenges the notion of external forces as the true demons, emphasizing the culpability of humanity in our misfortunes and the importance of recognizing the preciousness of life and relationships.‌‌

In essence, "My Demon" serves as a testament to the storytelling prowess inherent in Korean dramas. The tightly-woven plot, replete with unexpected turns, character transformations, and moral dilemmas, kept me on the edge of my seat.

I remained consistently captivated by the screen, particularly due to Kim Yoo-jung's outstanding portrayal of a remarkably self-assured and successful young woman, and felt her character to be the true “lead” of the show. The fateful romance within the narrative adds another layer of complexity, blurring the lines between good and evil. This action-packed yet emotionally charged series offers a refreshing take on the genre, showcasing the multifaceted nature of Korean storytelling.‌‌

Yet, amidst the familiar tropes of the genre—cliché scenes, overacting, the signature K-drama humor—I couldn't help but ponder. As a seasoned viewer accustomed to such elements, I couldn't ignore the contrasting realism found in recent global-hit dramas like "Squid Game" or "Moving."

These shows eschewed in-your-face antics like product placement and purposeful cringy lines, providing a different, more immersive viewing experience. While there's an ongoing debate on whether K-dramas should evolve for a global audience, I still found comfort in the unique quirks that define the K-drama experience, despite my enjoyment of the new global hits. However, I did feel like the product placement was a little overdone for such a highly-anticipated star-studded series, and felt like the story was unfolding around little ad breaks (despite my premium Netflix subscription). It will be intriguing to observe how these concepts continue to unfold on the global versus local stage.‌‌

"My Demon" was produced by Producer Kim Jang-han ("You Raise Me Up" and "Do You Like Brahms") and writer Choi Ah-il ("Mr. Queen"). The series airs on SBS and is accessible on Wavve for domestic viewers, while international audiences can enjoy it on Netflix.

‘마이 데몬(My Demon)’, 글로벌 성공 속 국내 시청률은 부진‌‌

배우 송강의 슈퍼내추럴 로맨스 드라마 시리즈 '마이 데몬(My Demon)'이 2024년 1월 20일 16회로 마무리됐다. 넷플릭스에 방송되며 인기를 얻었던 이 드라마는 글로벌 시장 호평과는 달리 한국에서 낮은 시청률로 고전했다. 언론 등의 호평이 있었지만, 긍정적 평가가 흥행으로 이어지지는 않았다. ‌‌

'마이 데몬'은 '악마 같은' 재벌 상속녀 도도희(김유정)와 한순간 능력을 잃어버린 '악마' 정구원(송강)이 계약 결혼을 하며 벌어지는 판타지 로맨틱 코미디다. 그들의 여정은 운명적인 로맨스로 전개되어 예상치 못한 방식으로 운명을 뒤얽히게 한다.‌‌

정구원은 송강의 다른 신비로운 그림자 같은 역할로 시작하지만, 곧 장난스러우면서도 고집이 많은 악마로 드러난다. 김유정이 연기한 도도희와 마주치면서 서로의 케미가 성숙하고 재미있는 인연으로 발전한다.‌‌

기자회견에서 김유정은 캐릭터 성장에 중점을 두며 두 주인공이 서로를 이해하고 보완하며 인간의 경험과 감유정에 더 깊이 몰입한다고 강조했다. 캐릭터의 역설적인 성격이 서로의 성장을 돕는다는 점이 매력적인 이야기를 만들어낸다. 드라마는 ‘2023 SBS 연기대상’에서  9개 부문에서 노미네이트 됐고  송강과 김유정은 베스트 커플상을 받았다. ‌‌

하지만,  시청률은 다소 아쉬웠다. '마이 데몬'은 닐슨 기준 3%대의 아쉬운 시청률로 막을 내리게 되었다. 닐슨코리아에 따르면, 최종회는 3.5%의 시청률을 기록했다. 이는 지난달 16일에 기록한 자체 최고 시청률 4.7%보다 1%포인트 정도 낮은 수치다. ‌‌

'마이 데몬'은 동시간대 방송된 MBC '열녀박씨 계약결혼뎐'과 후속작 '밤에 피는 꽃'과의 시청률 경쟁에서도 밀렸다. 특히 '밤에 피는 꽃'은 지난 1월 19일에 10.8%의 시청률을 기록하며 3회 만에 10%를 돌파했다.

글로벌에서 더 인기를 얻은 마이데몬‌‌

"마이 데몬"은  2023년 11월 24일에 공개한 이후로 넷플릭스 글로벌 관객을 사로잡으면서, 비영어 TV 부문에서 상위 10위 안에 랭크됐다. 공개 이후 8주 동안 상위 5위를 거의 떠나지 않고 있다. 드라마는 현재까지 총 63개 국가에서 상위 10위 안에 이름을 올렸으며, 라틴 아메리카와 동남 아시아 등에서 국가 1위를 차지했다.‌‌

'마이 데몬'은 결말에 가까워지며 더 힘을 냈다. 2024년 1월 8일부터 14일까지의 주에 차트에서 3위로 올라가며 270만 회의 조회수와 3,920만 시청시간을 기록했다. 그러나 한국에서는 6위로 떨어져 12월 4일 이후로 JTBC의 '웰컴 투 삼달리'와의 경쟁에서도 밀렸다.                  

최근 국제적으로 인기를 끌었던 드라마들이 국내 관객들에게는 호응을 얻지 못하는 경우도 늘고 있다. 패럿애널리스틱스에 따르면 '마이데몬'은 한국보다 필리핀에서 더 큰 인기가 있다. '마이 데몬'이 넷플릭스 순위에서도 글로벌 TOP 10 내 계속 머물랐다. ‌‌

송강과 김유정의 화면 케미는 훌륭하다는 것은 부인할 수 없다. 양 캐릭터는 성능에서 단순한 '눈매력'으로 비난받았지만, 두 배우는 자신의 이미 쌓인 배우 이미지를 뛰어넘어 캐릭터로 변화시키는 놀라운 기술을 보여준다. 종교의 묘미는 악마가 자신의 창조를 이해하기 어려운 신과 대조적으로 주인공으로서 예상치 못한 역할을 맡아내는 흥미로운 레이어를 더한다.‌‌

드라마는 액션으로 가득 찬 표면을 넘어 인간의 영혼, 감정의 중요성, 그리고 생명의 본질에 관련된 심오한 주제를 탐험한다. '마이 데몬'은 외부 힘을 참된 악마로 강조하며 우리의 불행에서 인간의 책임과 생명과 관계의 소중함을 인식하는 중요성을 강조한다.‌‌

본질적으로 '마이 데몬'은 한국 드라마에 내재된 스토리텔링 능력을 증명하는 작품이다. 예상치 못한 전개, 캐릭터의 변화, 도덕적 딜레마로 가득한 밀접하게 짜여진 줄거리는 화면 앞에서 계속해서 긴장하게 만들었다.

특히 김유정이 자신감 넘치는 성공적인 젊은 여성을 탁월하게 연기한 것을 볼 때 캐릭터가 정말로 이 드라마의 진짜 "주인공"이라고 느꼈다. 이야기 속의 운명적인 로맨스는 선과 악 사이의 경계를 흐린다. 이 액션 가득한 감동적인 시리즈는 한국 스토리텔링의 다면성을 보여주며 이 장르를 새롭게 펼치고 있다.‌‌

하지만 극의 전개가 아쉬웠다. 진부한 장면, 과한 연기, 대표적인 K-드라마 유머 등 K드라마 장르의 전형적인 클리세에 한국 시청자들은 외면했다.

이런 요소들에 익숙한 시청자로서 최근의 글로벌 히트 드라마 '오징어 게임'이나 '무빙'과 같은 현실적인 대조가 있었다.

이 드라마들은 PPL와 의도적으로 어색한 대사와 같은 눈에 띄는 액션을 배제하고 다양하고 몰입적인 시청 경험을 제공했다. K-드라마가 전 세계 관객을 위해 진화해야 하는지에 대한 논쟁이 계속되고 있지만, K드라마 경험을 정의하는 독특한 특징들 속에서 새로운 글로벌 히트 드라마를 즐기는 동안 그 독특한 특징들의 편안함을 느낀다. 그러나 이렇게 기대되는 스타들로 가득한 시리즈에 대해서는 PPL가 조금 지나치게 되었고, 이야기가 작은 광고 휴식 주위에 전개되는 것 같았다. 앞으로 이러한 개념들이 세계와 지역의 무대에서 어떻게 전개될지 궁금하다.‌‌
