윤기웅(Gi Yun) 네바다주립대 리노캠퍼스 저널리즘 스쿨 부학장이 학장(Dean)에 임명됐다. 한국 출신 학자가 단과대학 규모의 미국 저널리즘 스쿨 학장에 임명되기는 이번이 처음이다. 한국 한양대 신방과와 위시콘신 매디슨 대학교 저널리즘&매스 커뮤니케이션 대학에서 석사와 박사를 받았다.

레이놀즈 스쿨은 2023년 12월 20일 윤기웅 현 레이놀즈 스쿨 부학장(associate dean)을 내년(2024년) 1월 1일부터 학장에 임명한다고 밝혔다. 윤 학장은 지난 2016년 네바다주립대에 부임해 3년 전부터는 부학장으로 일해왔다. ‌‌‌‌

윤 교수는 20년 넘게 저널리즘과 매스커뮤니케이션을 연구해 온 그는 미디어 소비와 컴퓨터 기반 커뮤니케이션의 사회심리학적 측면에 대한 광범위한 연구를 발표했다. 미디어의 역할부터 커뮤니케이션 기술의 개인적, 사회적 영향에 이르기까지 넓은 주제를 연구해왔다.

윤 교수는 교수진과 대학원생에게 연구비를 지원하고, 연사를 초청하며, 연구실 장비와 공간을 관리하는 학교의 연구 기관인 레이놀즈 저널리즘스쿨 어드밴스드 미디어 연구 센터(the Reynolds School of Journalism Center for Advanced Media Studies) 소장도 역임했다.

윤 교수는 한국 언론 매체와도 교류를 확대했다. 레이놀즈 스쿨과 JTBC 뉴스룸이 MOU를 체결해 글로벌 저널리스트 양성 프로그램을 만들었다. 현재 이 프로그램은 3년째 진행 중이며, JTBC 기자가 레이놀즈 스쿨의 객원교수로 활동하고 있다. 그는 YTN, MBC 등 국내 주요 언론사 기자들과 함께 새로운 저널리즘 교육 프로그램을 운영하고 있습니다.레이놀즈스쿨에 합류하기 전에는 오하이오주 볼링그린 주립대학교에서 강의했다.

윤 신임 학자는 "알 학장님은 지난 12년 간 학생과 교수진이 배우고 일할 수 있는 훌륭한 환경을 조성해 왔습니다. 이러한 역할을 맡게 되어 큰 영광"이라며 "레이놀즈 스쿨을 다음 시대로 이끌고, 미래의 언론인과 미디어 전문가들이 끊임없이 변화하는 미디어 환경에 대비할 수 있도록 준비시킬 수 있기를 기대한다"고 전했다.

‌‌윤 신임 학장은 지난 12년간 학장을 역임한 알 스타비츠키의 뒤를 잇게 된다. 스타비츠키는 학장 재임 기간 동안 보건 및 과학 커뮤니케이션, 스페인어 미디어 및 영화 제작 분야의 새로운 학술 프로그램을 개설하고, 수많은 전국적인 상을 수상하는데 기여했다. 특히, KUNR 공영 라디오를 학교 산하로 편입시키는 등 많은 업적을 남겼다. 스타비츠키는 2024년 가을 레이놀즈 스쿨 교수로 복귀할 예정이다.

네바다주립대 브라이언 산도발 총장은 "윤 박사의 학장 임명은 레이놀즈 스쿨과 대학 전체의 동료, 협력자, 친구들로부터 환영을 받고 있다"며 "그는 미디어 전반에 대한 열정과 학교의 미래에 대한 혁신적인 비전을 가지고 있다."라고 밝혔다. 그는 또 "우리 대학 전체는 윤 박사의 리더십 아래 레이놀즈 저널리즘 스쿨의 진화를 목격할 수 있기를 기대한다"고 전했다.

The Reynolds School of Journalism announced Gi Yun has been named the school’s next dean, effective Jan. 1, 2024.

Yun has served as the Reynolds School’s associate dean for the last three years, after joining the school as a professor in 2016. He has been a scholar of journalism and mass communication for over 20 years and has published extensive research on the social psychological aspects of media consumption and computer mediated communication. His research spans a wide range of topics, from media's role in framing science to the individual and societal impacts of communication technology. Yun is the former director of the Reynolds School of Journalism Center for Advanced Media Studies, the school’s research arm, which awards research funding for faculty and graduate students, hosts speakers, and manages research lab equipment and space.

Dr. Yun has also been engaging with Korean news media outlets. An MOU between the Reynolds School and the JTBC newsroom created the Global Journalist Training Program. Currently, the program is in its third year, and a JTBC reporter is a visiting professor at the Reynolds School. He is running a new journalism training program in collaboration with journalists from one of major Korean news media outlet such as YTN and MBC.

Prior to joining the Reynolds School, Yun taught at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Yun received his Ph.D. and M.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. His journalism and mass communication undergraduate degree is from Hanyang University in Seoul, Korea.

“For the last 12 years, Dean Al has fostered an excellent environment for our students and faculty to learn and work. It is my great honor to step into this role,” said Yun. “I am looking forward to leading the Reynolds School into its next era, and preparing future journalists and media professionals for an ever-shifting media landscape.”

Yun succeeds Al Stavitsky who has served as dean for the last 12 years. Stavitsky has made a tremendous impact while in the role, launching new academic programs in health and science communication, Spanish-language media and film production, winning numerous national awards, and bringing KUNR public radio under the school, among many other accomplishments. Stavitsky will remain at the Reynolds School and return to faculty in the fall of 2024.
