BBC boss Tim Davie has issued a dire warning for the future of public service broadcasting around the world.Davie said: "It's scary. I don't mean 'a little bit of a problem'. I'd say it's a red alert situation in many markets." The situation is only getting worse as we become more politically polarized," said Davey.

Davie spoke on a panel on "The Digital Age of UK TV" at the Deloitte and Enders Analysis Media & Telecoms 2024 and Beyond Conference on June 7, 2024, alongside Channel 4 CEO Alex Mahon, ITV Studios Managing Director Julian Bellamy, and Channel 5 President and Paramount Regional Head Sarah Rose. The panel was moderated by Deloitte partner Rupert Darbyshire.

Channel 4 CEO Alex Mahon also praised the "battle for truth and trust" of public service broadcasters (PSBs). "It's quite different from content that is aggregated and fed by algorithms," she said. She added that public service broadcasting is important, especially for young people, given the flood of misinformation online. "We're in an age of democratic disengagement," Mahon pointed out.(We're in an age of democratic disengagement)

While streaming giants such as Netflix, Prime Video, and Apple have dominated the UK production sector over the past few years, the panelists pointed out that PSBs still play an essential role in the ecosystem.

Bellamy said that streaming subscription fees are "dwarfed by the size and reach of PSBs". However, he pointed out that high-profile writers such as "Succession" creator Phoebe Waller Bridge, "Fleabag" creator Phoebe Waller Bridge, "Doctor Who" showrunner Russell Davies, "Happy Valley" creator Sally Wainwright, and others have gone on to become global stars with the support of PSBs.

In this context, the panelists emphasized the importance of securing IP when working with streaming. "If you don't have IP, the value is not going to stay in this country," Mahon said, emphasizing that "if you don't have IP, the content business is just about making money."

채널4 CEO 알렉스 마혼 또한 공적 서비스 방송사(PSBs)의 "진실과 신뢰를 위한 싸움(battle for truth and trust)을 높게 평가했다.

그녀는 “집합화된 알고리즘에 의해 제공되는 콘텐츠와  상당히 다르다” 말했다. 그녀는 온라인에 허위 정보가 넘쳐나는 상황에서 특히 젊은이들에게 공적 서비스 방송은 중요하다고 덧붙였다. 마혼은 “우리는 민주적 비참여 시대에 살고 있다"고 지적했다.(We’re in an age of democratic disengagement)

패널리스트들은 지난 몇 년 동안 넷플릭스, 프라임 비디오, 애플과 같은 거대 스트리밍 업체가 영국 제작 부문을 장악했지만, PSB는 여전히 생태계에 필수적인 역할을 하고 있다고 지적했다.

벨라미 전무는 스트리밍 구독료가 “PSB의 규모와 수신료에 비해 압도적”이라고 말했다.

그러나 그는 ‘석세션(Succession)’ 제작자,  ‘플리백(Fleabag)’ 제작자 피비 윌러 브리지(Phoebe Waller Bridge), ‘닥터 후’ 쇼러너 러셀 데이비스, ‘해피 밸리(Happy Valley)’ 제작자 샐리 웨인라이트(Sally Wainwright) 등과 같은 유명  작가들이 PSB의 지원을 받아 세계적인 스타로 성장했다고 지적했다.

이러한 맥락에서 패널들은 스트리밍과의 작업에서 IP 확보의 중요성에 대해 강조했다.

마혼 CEO는 “IP를 확보하지 못한다면 그 가치는 이 나라에 남아있지 않을 것”이라며 “IP를 가지지 못한다면 콘텐츠 사업은 단지 돈을 버는 일일 뿐”이라고 강조했다.
