South by Southwest 2024 kicked off on March 8th local time in the U.S.

SXSW is a boundary-breaking entertainment and technology show. It's more of a festival than a trade show, so we'll be covering it like a festival. It's going to be a lot more mellow and diverse than our previous news and on-the-ground coverage. First up on day one is a meeting between British Princess Meghan Markle and Brook shields;

"소셜 미디어에서 우리는 인간성을 잃는다”(We've forgotten our humanity' on social media)"

전 미국 배우이자 영국 왕위계승 서열 5위인 해리 왕자의 부인 메간 마클(Meghan Markle)은 경계를 허무는 엔터테인먼트 테크놀로지 축제 사우스바이사우스웨스트SXSW에 참석해 자신이 아치(Archie)와 릴리벳(Lilibet)을 임신한 동안 "괴롭힘과 학대"의 표적이 되었다고 밝히며 소셜 미디어의 "끝이 없어 보이는 독성"을 비판했다.

SXSW는 3월 8일(미국 현지 시간) 미국 텍사스에서 10일 간의 대장정의 막을 올렸다. 8일을 시작으로 SXSW는 영화, 음악, 콘텐츠, XR, 크리에이티브 산업 등  테크놀로지와의 교감을 통해 새로운 경제를 만들어가는 현상을 조망한다.

메간은 세계 여성의 날(International Women's Day)을 기념해 SXSW 키노트 행사로 열린 ‘Keynote: Breaking Barriers, Shaping Narratives: How Women Lead On and Off the Screen’ 행사에서 배우 브룩쉴즈(Brooke Shields), 방송인 케이티 쿠릭(Katie Couric),  에릭 헤인즈(Errin Haines), 작가  낸시 왕 위엔(Nancy Wang Yuen) 등과 함께 등장했다. 이 키노트에 참석한 여성들은 자신들의 영역에서 편견과 싸우고 정상에 오른 인물들이다.

메건은 이제 자신의 정신 건강을 위해 그런 댓글에 거리를 두고 있다고 말했다.

해리 왕자는 행사장 첫번 째 줄에 앉아 그녀의 연설을 경청했다. 미디어와 디지털 세상의 특정 부분에서 사람들은 ‘인간성을 읽고 있다’고 언급했다.

메건은 “소셜 미디어와 온라인에서 제가 겪은 괴롭힘과 학대의 대부분은 아치와 릴리를 임신했을 때였다”며 “그것은 애교가 아니라 잔인한 행위였다”고 강조했다. 연설에서 그녀는 다양성의 중요성과 함께 영화와 엔터테인먼트에서의 모성애 묘사 등 다양한 주제를 이야기했다.

메건은 여성에 대한 잘못된 인식을 바로 잡기 위해 여성 스스로의 노력도 중요하다고 말했다. 메건은 “ 여성들이 온라인에서 서로에게 증오를 토해내는 것이 불안하다”고 말해며 “여성에 대한 끔찍한 글을 읽고 있다면 왜 친구들과 공유를 하는가. 친구나 엄마, 딸이었다면 그렇게 하지 않았을 것”이라고 설명했다.  이어 그녀는 “당신의 목소리를 작지 않다.

메건은 패널로 나온 케이티 쿠릭의 권유로 11살 때  프록터 앤 갬블에 편지를 보낸 사연을 소개하기도 했다. 식기 세척액을 홍보하는  광고가 성차별 적인 내용을 담고 있다는 것이다. 메건은  그 경험을 통해 목소리를 내고 옹호하는 것의 힘을 깨달았다고 말했다. 그녀는 "여러분의 목소리는 작지 않으며, 단지 들리기만 하면 된다”고 말했다.

"정말 힘들었지만, 뉴스룸을 바로 잡는데 기여해서 기쁘다"

2006년 여성 최초 CBS뉴스 메인 뉴스 ‘CBS Evening New’ 앵커를 역임했던 케이티 쿠릭은 방송사 재직 시절, 차별화 싸웠던 수많은 장면들을 이야기했다. 현재는 미국 주요 방송 뉴스 책임자가 모두 여성이지만, 과거에는 당연한 것을 쟁취하기 위해 나서야했던 과거를 회상했다.

케이티 쿠릭은 “정말 힘들었다. 첫 방송이 끝나고  다음 날 한 미디어 평론가가 '노동절인데 왜 하얀 옷을 입고 있냐'고 물었다”라고 말했다.

또  쿠릭은 전 CBS 이브닝 뉴스 앵커인  댄 래더(Dan Rather)가 자신을 지지하지 않았다고 덧붙였다. 쿠릭은 “댄 래더(Dan Rather)가 제가 뉴스를 멍청하게 만들고 있다고 말했다”며 “언론에 뭇매를 맞은 후 한동안 너무 속상했다”고 설명했다. 하지만, 그녀는 자신이 얻어낸 성과에 대해 만족했다.

쿠릭은 “돌이켜보면 이 일을 맡기를 정말 잘한 것 같다. 여성으로서 제 감성을 뉴스에 녹여낸 것 같다” 며 “특히, 뉴스룸에서 성차별을 없애는 데 기여했으며 여성들의 이야기가 전달될 수 있도록 감시자 역할을 했다”고 강조했다.

하지만 쿠릭은 방송 분야에서 여성의 자리가 더 확대되어야 한다고 이야기했다.

이와 관련 그녀는 팟캐스트 산업을 언급했다. 전체 팟캐스트 청취자의 50%가 여성이지만, 진행자의 79%는 남성이라며 여성 일자리가 더 확대되어야 한다고 언급했다. 특히, ABC, CBS, NBC, 폭스 등의 뉴스룸 책임자는 모두 여성이지만, 공교롭게도 스트리밍 뉴스 서비스 대표는 남자 백인들이라고 꼬집었다.

“할리우드는 젊음을 잡아먹지만 점점 나아질 수 있다”

올해로 58살이 된 유명 배우 브룩쉴즈는 1978년 할리우드 데뷔 이후 여자라는 편견과 싸워야 했던 과거를 회상했다.  쉴즈는 “할리우드는 어린아이를 잡아먹는 데 혈안이 되어 있다.

할리우드는 당신을 키워서 삼키려고 한다”며  "(할리우드는) 많이 나아졌지만 아직 갈 길이 멀다”고 강조했다. 그녀는 1978년 영화 "프리티 베이비(Pretty Baby)"에서 11살의 나이로 매춘부 역을 맡았다.

작가이자 교수인 헤인즈는 미국 USC에서 실시한  ‘영화와 TV’에서 다양성 연구 자료를 인용하며 유색인종과 여성의 (극중) 역할이 늘고 있다고 말했다.  

그러나 위엔은 “영화와 TV에서 유색인종 남성이 유색인종 여성보다 더 자주 등장한다”고 지적했다. 또 그녀는 기존 영화 스튜디오가 아닌 A24와 같은 작은 스튜디오가 유색 인종에 대한 영화를 더 많이 만든다고 말했다.

한편 패널들은 변화를 위한 책임(Responsibility for change) 있다고 말했다.

이와 관련  메건은 각광을 받든 받지 못하든 경력이 있는 여성과 어머니에 대한 문화적 인식을 바꾸기 위한 공동의 책임있다고 말했다. 메건은 “소셜 미디어의 위험성에 대해 "우리는 책임이 있으며 시스템적 변화는 문화적 변화와 동시에 일어나야 한다”고 덧붙였다.

'We've forgotten our humanity' on social media, "fought hard to expand the role of women in the newsroom"

Former US. actress and wife of Prince Harry, fifth in line to the British throne, Meghan Markle, attended the boundary-pushing entertainment and technology festival South by Southwest SXSW, where she criticized the "seemingly endless toxicity" of social media, revealing that she was targeted for "harassment and abuse" while pregnant with Archie and Lilibet.

SXSW kicked off its 10-day run in Texas on March 8 (local time). Kicking off on March 8, SXSW explores the new economy that is being created through the interplay of technology in film, music, content, XR, creative industries, and more.

In honor of International Women's Day, Megan will be speaking at the SXSW Keynote event, " Breaking Barriers, Shaping Narratives: How Women Lead On and Off the Screen," alongside actress Brooke Shields, broadcasters Katie Couric and Errin Haines, and author  Nancy Wang Yuen.

The women in this keynote have fought bias in their fields and risen to the top.

Meghan said she now distances herself from such comments for her own mental health.

Prince Harry sat in the first row of the venue and listened to her speech. She noted that in certain parts of the media and digital world, people are "reading humanity" into it.

"Much of the harassment and abuse I faced on social media and online was when I was pregnant with Archie and Lily," Meghan said, emphasizing that "it wasn't patronizing, it was cruel." In her speech, she touched on a variety of topics, including the importance of diversity and the portrayal of motherhood in film and entertainment.

Meghan said it's also important for women themselves to work to correct misconceptions about women. "It's disturbing to see women spewing hate at each other online," Meghan said, explaining, "If you're reading horrible things about women, why are you sharing it with your friends.

If it was your friend, or your mom, or your daughter, you wouldn't do that."  She added, "Your voice is not small.

Meghan also shared a story about how she wrote a letter to Procter & Gamble when she was 11 years old at the urging of fellow panelist Katie Couric.

She wrote to Procter & Gamble when she was 11 years old to complain about a sexist ad for their dishwashing liquid. Megan said the experience taught her the power of speaking up and advocating. "Your voice is not small, it just needs to be heard," she said.

Katie Couric, who became the first woman to anchor CBS News' main newscast, "CBS Evening New," in 2006, recounted numerous moments of discrimination during her time at the broadcaster. Today, every major U.S. broadcast news organization is headed by a woman, but she recalled having to fight for what was once taken for granted.

"It was really hard," Katie Couric recalled, "and the day after my first broadcast, a media critic asked me, 'Why are you wearing white on Labor Day?  She added that former CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather didn't support her. "Dan Rather told me I was dumbing down the news," Kurik said, explaining that she was "very upset for a while after I was vilified in the media." But she's happy with what she's accomplished.

"Looking back, I feel like I was really lucky to get this job. "I feel like I brought my sensibilities as a woman to the news," she said, "and in particular, I helped break down sexism in the newsroom and acted as a watchdog to ensure that women's stories were told.

However, couric said there is a need for more women in TV news. She talked about podcasting in this regard. While 50% of all podcast listeners are women, 79% of hosts are men, and she noted that there should be more jobs for women. Notably, the heads of newsrooms at ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox are all women, while the heads of streaming news services are all white men, she noted.

"Hollywood eats young people, but it can get better"

Brooke Shields, now 58, recalled how she had to fight prejudice against her as a woman when she made her Hollywood debut in 1978.  "Hollywood is hell-bent on eating children. It wants to grow you up and devour you," she said, emphasizing that "(Hollywood) has gotten a lot better, but it still has a long way to go." She played a prostitute in the 1978 movie "Pretty Baby" at the age of 11.

Haynes, an author and professor, cited diversity research from USC's "Film and TV" study, which found that (on-screen) roles for people of color and women are increasing.

However, Yuan pointed out that "men of color are still represented more often than women of color in film and television." She also said that smaller studios like A24, rather than traditional movie studios, make more films about people of color.

Meanwhile, the panelists said there is a responsibility for change. In this regard, Meghan said there is a collective responsibility to change cultural perceptions of career women and mothers, whether they are in the spotlight or not. "We have a responsibility," she said of the dangers of social media, "and systemic change has to happen at the same time as cultural change.
