U.S. President Joe Biden has announced that he will not seek re-election.

The decision comes almost a month after his June 27 presidential debate, which received the worst possible ratings for a series of broadcast gaffes, and just 107 days before the Democratic National Convention in Chicago (August 19), where the party's presidential nominee will be chosen.

In fact, it's unusual for a sitting U.S. president to give up a second term, but the mood was just as bad.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” Biden said in a statement released on Sunday. “And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

Many Hollywood celebrities also expressed their support for Biden's resignation on social media.
Singers Barbra Streisand, Lee Daniels, the Clintons, the Obamas, and many others praised Biden's decision, calling it a heroic and selfless act for America.

Netflix founder Reed Hastings took to social media to say that "Democrats should nominate the winner of swing states (states where Republicans and Democrats are neck-and-neck in elections)."  Ariana Grande re-shared Biden's post on her Instagram story and included a link to register to vote.

조 바이든(Joe Biden) 미국 대통령이 재선 도전 포기를 선언했다. 지난 6월 27일 대통령 토론회에 연이은 방송 실수로 최악의 평가를 받은 이후 거의 한 달 만이다.  또 민주당 대통령 후보를 선출하는 시카고 전당대회(8월  19일)을 불과 107일 앞둔 시점에 사퇴를 결심한 것이다 사실 미국 현직 대통령이 재선을 포기한 것은 이례적인 일이다.  그러나 분위기는 그만큼 최악이었다.

바이든  대통령은 미국 시간 일요일 21일 x를 통해 발표한 성명(said in a statement)에서 “여러분의 대통령으로 봉사한 것은 제 인생에서 가장 큰 영광이었다”며 “재선에 도전하는 것이 저의 의도였지만, 남은 임기 동안 대통령으로서의 의무를 다하는 데에만 집중하는 것이 당과 국가에 최선의 이익이라고 믿는다”고 말했다.(It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. 이어 그는 현직 부통령인 카마라 해리스(Kamala Harris)를 차기 대통령 후보로 지지한다고 밝혔다. 민주당의 대통령 후보는 전당대회를 통해 결정된다. 카말라 해리스 부통령은 조 바이든 대통령의 결정에 대해 "이타적이고 애국적인 행동”이라며 “바이든 대통령은 평생 봉사하면서 해왔던 일,  미국 국민과 나라를 위한 일에만 집중했다”고  말했다. 그녀는 또 “이번 지지를 받고 승리하기 위해 노력할 것”이라고 설명했다.

바이든은 "이번 주 후반에 (자신의) 결정에 대해 더 자세히 이야기할 것"이라고 말했다. 그는 “민주당원들은이제 힘을 합쳐 트럼프를 이겨야 할 때”라고 강조했다. 바이든은 6월 27일 CNN토론회 이후 사퇴 압박을 받아왔다.

리드 헤이스팅스 "민주당은 스윙스테이트 승자"를 선택해야

많은 사람들이 바이든의 결정을 미국을 위한 영웅적이고 이타적인 행동이라며 치켜세웠다. 할리우드와 실리콘밸리 등 엔터테인먼트, 엔터테크 종사자들은 상대적으로 민주당 지지 성향의 인사들이 많다.

넷플릭스 창업주 리드 헤이스팅스(Reed Hastings)는 “민주당은 스윙 스테이트의 승자(공화당과 민주당이 선거에서 접전을 벌이는 주)를 후보로 내세워야 한다”고 소셜 미디어를 통해 밝히기도 했다.  아리아나 그란데(Ariana Grande)는 자신의 인스타그램 스토리에 바이든의 게시물을 다시 공유하면서 유권자 등록 링크를 포함시켰다

로버트 드 니로(Robert De Niro)는 대리인을 통해 할리우드리포터에 "영리한 정치와 이타적인 애국심의 행동으로 조 바이든은 다른 민주당원이 대통령이 될 수 있는 길을 닦기 위해 물러났다”며 “투표함에서 도널드 트럼프를 물리치는 것보다 우리나라에 더 중요한 것은 없기 때문이다. 존경과 존경심, 애정을 담아 대통령님께 감사드린다”고 말했다.

WME 아리 엠마뉴엘(Ari Emanuel) 대표는 할리우드리포트에 “정말 이타적인 결정”이라며 “해리스는 이제 다른 민주당 대선 후보자들과 경쟁해야 한다”고 설명했다.

1942년 생인 바이든 대통령은 종종 말을 더듬었고 트럼프 대통령의 질문과 지적에 제대로 대응하지 못했다.  이날 CNN토론회는 인터넷과 TV를 포함 5,127만 명의 시청자수(22개 네트워크)를 기록했다.  그러나 2020년 토론회보다 2,200만 명 정도가 낮았다. 이후 바이든은 민주당 지지자들과 할리우드 거물들의 사퇴 압박을 받아왔다.

바이든은 토론 전에는 트럼프에게 뒤쳐져 있었고, 토론 후에도 많은 여론조사에서 트럼프가 뒤처지는 것으로 나타났다. 많은 기부자와 지지자들은 바이든의 선거운동 지속 능력에 우려를 표했고, 일부 정치인들은 공개적으로 바이든의 사퇴를 촉구했다.

역대 최대 규모 민주당 후보 지지 모금 행사(2,800만 달러)를 공동 주최한 영화 배우 조지 클루니(George Clooney)는 7월 10일자 뉴욕타임스 사설에서 대통령의 사퇴를 촉구하는 글을 기고했다. 클루니는 글에서 “"우리는 이 대통령으로는 11월에 승리할 수 없다. 이것은 제가 사적으로 이야기한 모든 상원의원, 하원의원, 주지사들의 의견이다. 공개적으로 무슨 말을 하든 상관없이 모든 사람의 의견”라고 설명했다.

CNN과 ABC 뉴스의 보도에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 낸시 펠로시 전 하원의장, 척 슈머 상원 다수당 원내대표, 하킴 제프리스 하원 소수당 원내대표의 압력에도 직면했다.

바이든 대통령은 토론이 단순히 한 번의 실수일 뿐이라고 민주당원들을 안심시키려고 노력했다. 7월 2일 버지니아에서 열린 모금 행사에서 “(토론회 실수가)해외 여행 후 충분한 휴식을 취하지 못했기 때문”이라고 말했다. 또 이어 ABC뉴스(조지 스테파노풀로스,  George Stephanopoulos, Lester Holt)와 NBC 대표 앵커(레스터 홀트)들과 인터뷰를 하면서 실수를 만회하려 했다.

7월 11일 나토 정상회의에서 기자 회견을 열어 자신의 발언 능력에 대한 우려를 진정시키기 위해 노력했다. 하지만 그는 실수로 해리스 부통령을 "트럼프 부통령"이라고 불러 논란을 더욱 증폭시켰다. 이어 그는 정상회담에서 우크라이나 대통령을 볼로디미르 젤렌스키가 아닌 푸틴 대통령으로 잘못 소개하는 큰 실수를 했다.

바이든은 7월 16일 BET와의 인터뷰에서 출마를 재고하게 만드는 요인이 있는지 질문 받았다. 이에 그는 “만약 나에게 어떤 질병이 나타난다면. 의사들이 저를 찾아와서 문제가 있다”라고 한다면 재고 할 필요가 없다”고 설명했다. 다음 날 그는 코로나 바이러스 감염 사실을 알리기도 했다.

최근 몇 달 동안 대통령의 참모들은 그가 내부 회의에서 여전히 강압적이고 직원들을 지치게 하는 일정을 소화한다며 그의 나이와 체력에 대한 우려를 일축해 왔다. 그러나 공개석상에서 그의 말실수는 점점 더 잦아졌고, 그의 목소리는 때때로 속삭이는 수준까지 떨어져 큰 우려를 낳았다. 이런 문제들이 사퇴를 결심하게 된 것이다.

현직 대통령이 재선 도전을 포기한 것은 1968년 이후 처음이다. 그해 린든 존슨 대통령(Lyndon Johnson)은 뉴햄프셔 예비선거에서 큰 패배를 기록한 뒤 2주 만인 3월 말에 사퇴했다. 부통령 휴버트 험프리(Hampshire primary)가 시카고에서 열린 민주당 전당대회에서 후보로 지명되었지만 총선에서 리처드 닉슨(Richard Nixon)에게 패했다. 올해 민주당 전당대회는 오는 8월 19일부터 22일까지 시카고에서 열린다.

My Fellow Americans,

Over the past three and a half years, we have made great progress as a Nation.

Today America has the strongest economy in the world. We’ve made historic investments in rebuilding out Nation, in lowering prescription drug cost for seniors, and in expanding affordable health care to a record number of Americans. We’ve provided critically needed care to a million veterans exposed to toxic substances. Passed the first gun safety law in 30 years. Appointed the first African American woman to the Supreme Court. And passed the most significant climate legislation in the history of the world. America has never been better positioned to lead than we are today.

I know none of this could have been without you, the American people. Together, we overcame a once in a century pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We’ve protected and preserved our Democracy. And we’ve revitalized and strengthened our alliances around the world.

It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.
