김규삼 작가의 웹툰을 원작으로 한 디즈니+ 오리지널 시리즈 '비질란테(Vigilante)'가 지난 11월 18일 공개 하루만에 한국 TOP 10 TV쇼 부문 1위에 오르는 등 뜨거운 호응을 받고 있다.

디즈니+는 드라마 ‘무빙(Moving)’에 이은 2연타 안타를 쳤다. 비질란테는 자경단, 즉 공권력이 아닌 사적 복수를 하는 인물을 말한다.

'비질란테'는 낮에는 모범적인 경찰대생이지만, 밤에는 법망을 피해가는 범죄자들을 응징하는 ‘비질란테’로 변신하는 김지용(남주혁)의 이야기를 그린 액션 스릴러다.

드라마는 어릴 적 건달에게 엄마를 폭행으로 잃은 후, 합당한 차별을 받지 못한 범죄자를 찾아가 정의를 실현하기 위해 비질란테가 된 김지용의 복수극을 긴장감 넘치게 그려내고 있다. 특히, 실제 사회적 사건을 연상케 하는 설정과 리얼한 액션이 어우러져 시청자들의 몰입감을 높였다.

‘비질란테’에 대한 뜨거운 관심은 파렴치한 범죄를 저질렀지 교묘하게 법망을 피해가는 범죄자에 대한 대중의 분노와 맞닿아있다. 이런 범죄자에 대한 대중의 분노와 불안이 커지면서, '비질란테'와 같은 다크 히어로물에 대한 관심도 높아졌다.

이에 앞서 글로벌 빅히트를 기록한 넷플릭스 오리지널 ‘더글로리(The Glory)’ 역시, 학창시절 왕따에 대한 사적 복수가 주요 테마다. 사적복수가 바람직하지 않지만, 시청자들에게는 통쾌한 쾌감을 줄 수 있다.

'비질란테'의 성공은 현실적인 걸정과 액션이 통쾌하며, 한국형 다크 히어로물의 가능성을 보여준 것으로 평가된다. ‘무빙,’ ‘최악의 악’에 이어, 초반부터 시청자의 주목을 끈 디즈니+ 순위의 액션 장면과 폭발력은 뽑을만한 스토리를 입증했다.

이 드라마는 ‘글로리 데이’와 ‘시동’이라는 작품으로 유명한 최정열 감독이 연출하고 있으며, 남주혁, 유지태, 김소진, 이준혁이 주연한다.

'비질란테'는 매주 디즈티+에서 수요일 2회씩 공개되며, 현재(11월 16일) 2회차까지 공개된 상태다.

Vigilante: Korean Dark Superhero Drama Opens to Rave Reviews

South Korea's latest dark superhero drama, Vigilante, has opened to rave reviews, quickly climbing to the top of Disney+'s Top 10 TV shows chart in just one day. ‘Vigilante’ opened to global markets on Nov. 18.

Vigilante means a member of a self-appointed group of citizens who undertake law enforcement in their community without legal authority, typically because the legal agencies are thought to be inadequate.

The series follows the story of Kim Ji-yong (Nam Joo-hyuk), a seemingly ordinary police academy student who moonlights as a vigilante. Ji-yong's mother was killed by a thug when he was young, and he now seeks to bring justice to criminals who have evaded proper punishment by law. The show has been praised for its gripping plot, realistic action, and timely themes.

The series taps into a growing trend of Korean dramas that explore the idea of vigilante justice, such as “The Glory” and “The Devil Judge.” In recent years, there have been a number of high-profile cases in Korea where criminals have evaded justice, leading to a sense of frustration and anger among the public.

The Netflix original "The Glory," a global smash hit, also centers on a private revenge against school bullying. While personal vendettas may not be desirable, they can be cathartic for viewers.

The Disney+ series' high-octane action and explosive storytelling have already proven it to be a hit worth watching, and is a positive sign for the future of Korean dark superhero stories.

Global demand for ‘Vigilante’ is also high. According to Parrot analytics, which measures content demand, Vigilante rose to #4,978 in demand (#1,992 globally) within a week of its release. The content is expected to be a global hit following its Korean release;

The series is directed by Choi Jung-yeol, who is known for his work on films such as “Glory Day” and “Start Up,” and stars Nam Joo-hyuk, Kim So-jin, Yoo Ji-tae, and Lee Jun-hyuk.

The series is currently streaming on Disney+, with two new episodes(as of 16th Nov) released every Wednesday.
