Comcast and Disney have started negotiations to sell their stakes in streaming service Hulu. Comcast and Disney last week signed a modification to their agreement to bring forward the timing of their sale talks for Comcast’s stake in Hulu to Sept. 30, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said.
In preparation for the online streaming era in 2007, the first-generation streaming Hulu was created in collaboration with Disney, 21st Century Fox, and NBC Universal, Time Warner. However, with Disney's acquisition of Fox in 2019, Disney became the largest shareholder (66%).
As a result, Comcast, a major shareholder of NBC Universal, has agreed to sell its stake (33%) to Disney. Hulu's stake change could have a big impact on the streaming market. Those with Hulu can build mega-streaming.
The sale of Hulu is bound to have an impact on the Korean market. Amid intensifying competition among streaming operators in South Korea, the need for M&A can be further increased.
