Entertainment technology, the technology that adds value to entertainment such as drama and music and finds new audiences, is becoming the core competitiveness of the content business.

While technology has been important in the past, it has come to the point where it can make or break a business, and companies with the best entertainment technology dominate the market.  Streaming and AI are two of the most important technologies that entertainment companies are focusing on these days.

Netflix is by far the best at streaming.  Even Disney, the world's No. 1 entertainment and technology company, lags behind when it comes to streaming. Disney CEO Bob Iger has said that the company lags behind Netflix in technological capabilities and is working to catch up.

It's unusual for the CEO of Disney to say he wants to catch up to Netflix.

It's not something that the ego of the No. 1 global entertainment company would allow. But it's also a conversation that smacks of Disney's desperation.  In the age of streaming, Disney is far behind Netflix in terms of demand for its content.

드라마, 음악 등 엔터테인먼트의 부가가치를 높여주고 새로운 오디언스를 찾아주는 기술인 ‘엔터테인먼트 테크놀로지’가 콘텐츠 비즈니스의 핵심 경쟁력이 되고 있다. 과거에도 테크놀로지는 중요했지만, 지금은 사업의 성패를 좌우하는 상황까지 왔다.

뛰어난 엔터테인먼트 테크놀로지를 가진 기업이 시장을 지배하는 시대가 온 것이다.  요즘 엔터테인먼트 기업들이 가장 신경쓰고 있는 테크놀로지는 단연 스트리밍과 AI다.

스트리밍 관련 기술력이 가장  좋은 기업은 단연 넷플릭스(Netflix)다.  글로벌 1위 엔터테인먼트 기업이자 테크놀로지 회사인 디즈니(Disney)도 스트리밍에서는 후발 주지다. 디즈니 CEO 밥 아이거(Bob Iger)는 기술적인 능력에서 넷플릭스(Netflix)에 뒤져있다며 그들을 따라 잡기 위해 노력 중이라고 밝혔다.

밥 아이거는 모건스탠리가 주최한 ‘20224 모건 스탠리 테크놀로지, 미디어&텔레콤 컨퍼런스’에 참가해 “마케팅 비용을 줄이고 고객 이탈률(Churn)을 낮추기 위해 "우리는 그들(넷플릭스) 수준에 도달해야 한다"고 말했다.

아이거 CEO는 “디즈니가 디즈니+, 훌루(Hulu), ESPN+ 등 스트리밍 비즈니스에서 수익성을 확보하는 과정에 있다"고 지적했다. 그는 “2024년 9월까지 수익을 낼 수 있을 것으로 본다.

그러나 수익성만이 중요한 것이 아니다"리며 "스트리밍을 회사의 진정한 성장 동력으로 전환하는 것이 중요하다”고 강조했다. 물론 이를 위해선 스트리밍 서비스를 확대하기 위한 데이터 분석, 고객 추천, AI알고리즘 등의 기술력이 필요하다.

디즈니의 CEO가 넷플릭스를 따라 잡겠다고 언급한 것은 이례적이다.
