틱톡 퇴출 위기 그러나 매출은 급증 84.4B(TikTok Exit Threatened, But Revenue Surges)

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill (Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act) that would ban Tiktok. If TikTok's majority shareholder, ByteDance, does not diversify its shareholders, it will be barred from doing business in the U.S., a country of 170 million people.

This is the first time the U.S. Congress has banned an internet app. Many in Congress perceive TikTok, which is majority owned by China, as a security risk to the United States. They are concerned that Americans' personal information could be taken to China and used against them. TikTok has repeatedly maintained that the Chinese government has made no such demands and that it would not comply even if it did.

However, the sale of TikTok is unlikely to be easy.

It still needs to be approved by the Senate. Some senators are reportedly opposed to passing the law, citing First Amendment violations.  It's also hard to find a big enough player to take over social media, which is used by 170 million people in the United States. Microsoft, Google, Meta, and others have been mentioned, but antitrust laws are the biggest obstacle

ByteDance revenue in the third quarter of 2023 rose roughly 43% to $30.9 billion, indicating that the TikTok parent company accelerated advertising and ecommerce sales slightly from the first half.

It also demonstrated that ByteDance is continuing to grow at nearly twice the growth rate of Facebook-owner Meta Platforms. For the first nine months of the year, ByteDance revenue rose 40% to $84.4 billion, it disclosed in private documents viewed by The Information.

미국 하원이 틱톡(Tiktok) 사용을 금지하는 법안(Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act)을 통과시켰다. 틱톡의 대주주의 바이트댄스(ByteDance)가 주주를 다양화하지 않으면 1억 7,000만 명이 있는 미국에서 사업을 하지 못하게 된다. 미국 의회가 인터넷 앱의 사용을 금지한 것은 이번이 처음이다. 미국 의회 상당수는 중국이 대주주인 틱톡을 미국의 보안 위기로 인식하고 있다. 미국인들의 개인 정보를 중국으로 빼돌려, 이를 악용할 가능성에 대해 우려하는 것이다. 틱톡은 중국 정부는 그런 요구를 한적이 없으며  요구가 있더라도 이에 응하지 않을 것이라고 반복해 주장해 왔다.

그러나 틱톡의 매각은 쉽지는 않을 것으로 보인다. 상원에서 승인 절차가 남아있다. 일부 상원의원들은 수정 헌법 1조 위반을 거론하며 법 통과를 반대하고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.  미국 내에서 1억 7,000만 명이 사용하고 있는 소셜 미디어를 인수할 덩치 큰 사업자를 찾기도 어렵다. 마이크로소프트, 구글, 메타 등이 거론되지만, 박독점 법안이 가장 걸림돌이다.

‘외국의 적대적인 애플리케이션으로부터 미국인 보호법(Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act)’이라고 불리는 이 법은 3월 13일(미국 시간) 하원에서 초당적인 지지를 받으며 352대 65로 통과됐다.

법안이 3분의 2 이상의 찬성을 얻어야 통과되는 '규칙 유예(suspension of the rules)' 일정에 따라 패스트 트랙(fast-tracked)으로 처리된 이후에 나온 것이다.
