또 하나의 ‘케이블+스트리밍 패키지 탄생’ 차터와 파라마운트+ 고객 잡기 공동 협업(Another cable TV + streaming package, charter and a Paramount "catch the exodus" collaboration)

As cord-cutting accelerates in the U.S., another cable TV+streaming bundle has been created. This is where cable TV subscribers get certain streaming services for free as part of a deal between the companies. It is a high-stakes strategy for cable TV operators to capture customers who are leaving.  It will be interesting to see if this will be an option for South Korean cable TV operators, who have announced that they will stop offering terrestrial free-to-air VOD (FVOD) due to excessive costs and changing viewing trends.

Charter Communications, the No. 1 cable TV provider in the U.S., announced that on August 22, 2024, it will offer Paramount+ essential streaming to its cable TV package subscribers nationwide (Spectrum TV Select and Mi Plan Latino) at no additional charge.  The new offerings will go on sale immediately on August 22nd.

케이블TV를 떠나 스트리밍 서비스로 옮겨가는 ‘코드커팅(Cord-Cutting)이 가속되는 가운데 미국에서 또 하나의 케이블TV+스트리밍 번들’이 탄생했다. 케이블TV구독자들에게 업체간 협상으로 특정 스트리밍 서비스를 무료로 제공하는 것이다.

떠나는 고객들을 잡기 위한 케이블TV사업자들의 고육지책이다.  과도한 비용과 시청 트렌드 변화로 지상파 무료 VOD(FVOD) 제공 중단을 선언한 한국 케이블TV사업자들도 검토할 수 있는 옵션이 될지 주목된다.

미국 케이블TV 1위 사업자 차터 커뮤니케이션스(Charter Communications)는 2024년 8월 22일 전미 케이블TV패키지 가입자(Spectrum TV Select 및 Mi Plan Latino)들에게 추가 요금 없이 파라마운트+에센셜 스트리밍(Paramount+ essential)을 제공한다고 밝혔다.  새로운 상품은 8월 22일부터 바로 판매된다.

이 결합 상품은 지난 5월 파라마운트와 차터 간 프로그램 사용료 재협상 과정에서 도출됐다.

파라마운트는 사용료 인상을 요구했고 차터는 거부했다. 여러 차례 회의 끝에 프로그램 사용료를 인상하는 대신, 파라마운트는 자사의 스트리밍을 케이블TV 구독자들에게 무료로 제공하는 옵션을 제시했다.
