Disney has announced plans to invest $1.5 billion in Epic Games as part of its final quarterly earnings report for 2023. Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that the company will "build a massive 'Disney Universe' virtualized at Epic Games," This is the largest investment Disney has ever made in a game.
The multi-scale universe Disney is creating is a virtual place for their characters from Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and more to play. "The Universe will provide consumers with a world-class gaming experience and multiple opportunities to interact with Fortnite and play, watch, shop, and engage with content, characters, and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar, and more," said Bob Iger, CEO.
"We've gone into video games in many different directions, and licensing has really been our biggest success," said Iger. "Last year, we signed $9 billion in franchise licenses, including the Spider-Man franchise, which was the most successful video game of all time.
"This is where players, gamers, and fans will be able to create their own stories and experiences, showcase their fandom, and share new content the way they like," he continued.
Iger also spoke to CNBC's Julia Boorstin about connecting the virtual and real worlds: "The deal could include physical merchandise that could be fully interconnected with Fortnite," he said. The project, which has been years in the making, is powered by Epic Games' Unreal Engine.
In fact, the most important thing about the universe Disney is creating is the people. Specifically, Disney is a 100-year-old company, but some of their characters are aging. Disney needs new characters and drivers to bring in the alpha generation.

아이거는 “우리는 다양한 방향으로 비디오 게임에 도전해왔고, 실제로 가장 큰 성공을 거둔 것은 라이선스”라며 “작년에 가장 성공적인 비디오 게임이었던 스파이더맨 프랜차이즈를 포함해 90억 달러 규모의 프랜차이즈 라이선스를 체결했다"고 말했다.
그는 이어 “ 플레이어와 게이머, 팬들은 이 곳에서 자신들의 스토리와 경험을 만들어내고 팬덤을 표시하고 자신들이 좋아하는 방식대로 새로의 콘텐츠를 공유할 수 있을 것”이라고 강조했다.
