아프리카에서 K드라마 성공의 비밀은?(The secret to K-drama success in Africa is)

K-dramas are becoming very popular in Africa (FAST). In particular, the number of viewers watching K-content is increasing not only in South Africa but also in Nigeria.

In African countries with a relatively high proportion of young people, there is a strong interest in K-romance dramas based on webtoons. In addition, K-dramas are highly accessible as most of them have English dubbing or subtitles.

Africa is home to thousands of languages, but English is spoken in almost every country. Recently, K-dramas have also been consumed via free ad-supported streaming TV FAST. The FAST market in Africa is just beginning.

Wendy Parkies, an expert on African media markets, told the FASTMASTER podcast that Korean dramas are becoming more popular as FAST spreads in Africa.

Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, Wendy Parkes currently manages a fast channel platform called "premium free TV"

The premium free-to-air TV with 25 fast channels is available via streaming and satellite. In Africa, with its large land mass and low population density, it is often necessary to offer satellite and streaming simultaneously.

K드라마가 아프리카(FAST)에서 큰 인기를 끌고 있다. 특히,  아프리카 남아프리카 공화국 뿐만 아니라 나이지리아에서도 K콘텐츠를 보는 시청자가 증가하고 있다.

젊은 인구 비중이 상대적으로 높은 아프리카 국가에서는 웹툰 원작 K로맨스 드라마에 대한 관심이 크다. 아울러 K드라마가 영어 더빙이나 자막을 거의 다 보유하고 있고 있어 높은 접근성을 가지고 있다.

아프리카는 통용되는 언어가 수천개가 넘지만 영어는 거의 모든 나라에서 통용되고 있다. 최근에는 K드라마는 무료 광고 기반 스트리밍 TV FAST를 통해서도 많은 소비가 일어나고 있다. 아프리카의 FAST 시장은 이제 시작이다.

아프리카 미디어 시장 전문가인 웬디 파키스(Wendy Parkies)은 패스트마스터(FASTMASTER) 팟캐스트에 출연해 아프리카 시장에서 FAST가 확산되고 있는 가운데 한국 드라마의 인기가 더 높아지고 있다고 진단했다.

남아프리카 공화국 요하네스버그에 기반을 둔 웬디 파키스는 현재 ‘프리미엄 프리 TV(premium free TV)’라고 불리는 패스트 채널 플랫폼을 관리하고 있다.

25개 패스트 채널을 보유한 프리미엄 프리 TV는 스트리밍과  위성방송을 통해 송출되고 있다. 면적이 넓고 인구 밀도가 낮은 아프리카의 경우 위성과 스트리밍을 동시에 제공해야 하는 경우가 많다.
