AI는 피할 수 없는 대세. 공정한 보상과 사전 동의가 필수(AI is inevitable in Hollywood. Focus on informed consent and fair compensation)

Gen AI - the ability to create images, videos, and text on command - is gaining ground in Hollywood. It's not just a sidekick that helps humans create content, it's now challenging the status quo.

In particular, the use of AI has been expanding since the introduction of T2V (Text to Video) AI tools that create videos from text. Open AI's Sora can create up to one minute of video based on prompts. This means that video production could become possible without the need for cameras or other filming equipment.

AI has also made it possible to write scripts or work concepts, translate, generate subtitles, edit videos, and create special effects on a PC. At the same time, the proliferation of AI is also causing problems.  Hollywood's creative industry is growing more fearful. However, the consensus is that Hollywood without AI is unthinkable. Therefore, there are many voices calling for fair compensation and informed consent for the use of AI. Of course, humans still have a role to play in the AI era.

Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, Executive Vice President and Chief Negotiator for the Screen Actors Guild of America (SAG-AFTRA), attended the session "AI's Role in the Future of Hollywood," on March 9, 2024, at South by Southwest (SXSW), the world's largest entertainment technology festival. In this session, he detailed the  "impact of AI on the content creation industry and actors in film, TV, and more," as well as the "AI Guidelines negotiation process" with user groups during the strike. Duncan Crabtree-Ireland focused on the impact of AI on Hollywood. The session was moderated by Fast Company Editor-in-Chief Brendan Vaughan.

주어진 명령에 따라 이미지, 비디오, 텍스트를 만드는 생성AI는 할리우드 내 점유율을 높이고 있다. 이제 AI는 콘텐츠 제작에서 인간을 돕는 조수를 넘어 주체에 까지 도전하고 있다.

특히 텍스트로 비디오를 만드는  T2V(Text to Video) AI툴 등장 이후 AI활용도는 넓어지고 있다. 오픈AI(Open AI)가 내놓은 ‘소라(Sora)’는 프롬프트에 따라 최대 1분의 영상을 만들어낼 수 있다. 카메라나 기타 촬영 장비가 없이도 영상 제작이 가능해질 수 있는 것이다.

아울러 AI는 각본이나 작업 컨셉트 작성, 번역, 자막생성, 영상 편집, 특수 효과 등도 PC를 통해 가능하게 했다. 동시에 AI 확산으로 인한 문제점도 나오고 있다.  할리우드 창작 업계의 두려움도 더 커지고 있다. 그러나 AI가 없는 할리우드는 상상할 수 없다는 것이 중론이다. 이에 AI 사용과 관련한 공정한 보상과 사전 동의가 반드시 이뤄져야 하는 목소리가 높다. 물론 AI시대도 인간이 역할은 분명히 있다. 오히려 더욱 커질 수 있다.

[SXSW, AI와 할리우드의 공존 가능성 세션 열어]

미국 배우 조합(SAG-AFTRA) 전무 겸 수석 협상가 던컨 크랩트리-아일랜드(Duncan Crabtree-Ireland)는 2024년 3월 9일 세계 최대 엔터테인먼트 테크놀로지 축제 사우스바이사우스웨스트(SXSW)에서 진행된 세션 AI’s Role in the Future of Hollywood’에 참석했다. 이 세션에서 그는  “AI가 영화, TV 등 콘텐츠 창작 산업과 배우들에게 미치는 영향과 파업 당시 사용자 단체와의 ‘AI가이드라인 협상 과정”을 상세히 공개했다. 이 자리에서 던컨 크랩트리-아일랜드는   할리우드에 미치고 있는 AI의 영향에 대해 집중적으로 이야기했다. 세션은 브랜든 본(Brendan Vaughan) 패스트 컴퍼니 편집장이 진행을 맡았다.

AI가 인간의 작업을 대체하고 있다. 이에 일자리 감소, 실직 등은 창작 집단에 직접적인 영향을 주고 있다. 또 다른 사람의 얼굴이나 행동을 AI로 복제하는 딥페이크(Deep fake) 등은 범죄에 악용되면서 사회적인 문제로도 대두되고 있다. 타인의 동의 없이 AI딥페이크 기술을 이용해 범죄에 악용하거나 수익을 올리는데 쓰고 있기 때문이다.

미국 할리우드 작가와 배우들도  2023년 스튜디오와의 근로조건 협상에서 AI를 주요 쟁점으로 협상 테이블에 올렸다. 작가와 배우들은 급기야 150일이 넘는 파업을 벌였다. 2023년 7월 파업을 시작했던 배우 노조는 스튜디오와 치열한 협상 끝에, 11월 9일 합의에 성공했다. 합의에 따르면 스튜디오들이 배우들의 초상권을 이용해 AI생성물을 만들 경우 반드시 동의를 구하고 보상도 해야 한다. 직접 출연했던 자신의 디지털 복제품이 나왔던 보상은 마찬가지다.
