[DML 뉴스레터 8월 1주]2024년 8월 시카고(Chicago) 한국의 미래를 결정한다(In August 2024, Chicago will decide the future of the country)

It's already August, and this is the first week of the DML newsletter. Every Friday we'll be sending out a newsletter to remind you of articles we've written and to analyze issues or trends that we didn't get around to writing about. We hope you'll enjoy it.

This is a view of downtown Chicago (including Millennium Park) on August 1, 2024 in the U.S.

Today's Chicago is tied to the future of Korea, because from August 19-22, the Democratic National Convention(DNC), which will officially nominate U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party's presidential candidate, will be held at the United Center. The United Center, as many of you know, is the home of the NBA's popular Chicago Bulls.

And from August 1-4, Chicago is the site of a festival.  Lollapalooza Chicago will be held in Chicago's Grant Park. Lollapalooza Chicago is an alternative rock, heavy metal, punk rock, hip-hop, and dance music festival featuring world-renowned artists. Both of these events have direct ties to South Korea.

2024년 8월 1일 미국 시카고 도심(밀레니엄 파크 등)의 모습입니다. 지금의 시카고는 한국의 미래와 직결됩니다. 왜냐구요? 먼저 8월 19일부터 22일 카말라 해리스(Kamala Harris) 미국 부통령을 민주당 대선 후보로 공식 추대하는 전당대회(DNC, The Democratic National Convention)가  유나이티드 센터(United Center)에서 열립니다. 유나이티드 센터는 다들 아시다시피, NBA 인기 농구단 시카고 불스의 홈구장입니다. 그리고 8월 1일부터 4일까지 시카고는 축제의 현장입니다.

시카고 그랜트 공원(Grant Park)에서 롤라팔루자 시카고(Lollapalooza)가 개최됩니다. 롤라팔루자 시카고는  얼터너티브 록(alternative rock), 헤비메탈, 펑크 록, 힙합, 댄스 음악 축제로 세계적으로 유명한 아티스트들이 참여하여 음악 공연을 펼칩니다. 이 두 행사 모두 한국과 직접적인 연관관계를 가지고 있습니다.
