오스카의 흥행과 TV시청률의 상관관계(How Oscar TV's box office correlates to TV viewership)

The Oscars, the world's most prestigious film festival. The 2024 ceremony was Oppenheimer's solo show. This year's (2024) Oscars were all about Oppenheimer.

Oppenheimer swept the major categories, including best picture, best director (Christopher Nolan), best actor (Cillian Murphy), best supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr), cinematography, and editing.  "Barbie" more than doubled Oppenheimer's box office performance and was nominated in six categories, but only took home one trophy (Best Music).

Despite competing at the Oscars, Barbie and Oppenheimer will collaborate in theaters in 2023. The decision by Universal and Warner Bros.

to release Barbie and Oppenheimer in theaters in the summer of 2023, respectively, actually allayed many fears. However, the two films have been a hit in theaters, even spawning a meme called "Barbenheimer," which started the trend of seeing them together.

The two films also collaborated on the March 10, 2024 awards show on ABC.  TV ratings for Oscar night were huge. The telecast on ABC was watched live by 19.5 million people.

According to Nielsen, this is the highest audience in four years. ABC moved the broadcast time from 8 p.m. ET to 7 p.m. ET to help boost ratings. In particular, the advertiser's target demographic (18-49) delivered a strong 3.81 million viewers.  In its coverage of the Oscars, U.S. news outlet AXIOS wrote that "The death of award shows' TV ratings has been greatly exaggerated.
