CES2024, the world's largest IT show, has begun in Las Vegas, U.S. The Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC), the main venue for CES2024, and the entire city where the show floor is located are bustling with exhibitors and visitors from around the world.

Compared to CES2023, which resumed last year after the pandemic, this year's event is expected to be "bigger than ever," with more than 4,000 exhibitors, up 22%, and more than 130,000 attendees, up 30%.

CES, which began in New York in 1967, has been completely transformed from an exhibition centered on home appliances such as TVs, refrigerators, and PCs in the early days to an exhibition centered on advanced technologies and products since the mid-2000s as the influence of information and communication technology (ICT) has spread throughout the economy and society.

The history of CES is a history of the development of advanced technologies such as the Internet and mobile, and it has been recognized as a leading event in the history of corporate innovation from global companies to startups.

With more than 40 technology categories and more than 26 soccer fields of exhibit space, CES is held not only at the main venue, the LVCC, but also throughout downtown Las Vegas.

For example, Hyundai Motor Group's exhibit hall is the size of a soccer field, so you can see all the latest technologies and products in one place, but if you don't prepare, you can spend a lot of money and time and not get much out of it.

To help attendees and others interested in CES understand what to expect, here are four key takeaways from CES2024, based on the "2024 Tech Trends" released by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), which organizes CES, at its media day the day before the event.

First, let's look at the spread of artificial intelligence (AI) across industries.

The history of AI, which began in the United States in the 1950s, has entered a new phase with the introduction of ChatGPT in November 2022. In the future, the history of AI will be newly divided into before and after ChatGPT.

Along these lines, AI will be one of the major technology areas highlighted at CES 2024. At the media day event, CTA said, "The 'advancement of AI' across all industries, including industrial infrastructure, mobility, digital healthcare, sustainability, and smart home, will be the biggest topic of conversation at CES2024." He also pointed to the proliferation of AI, saying that AI technology will be seen in almost "every booth.

Gen AI, which has been driving AI technology and industry in recent years, is just one part of the larger AI ecosystem. CTA says that starting with CES2024, this year will be the year that users discover what the broader AI ecosystem has to offer. CTA Director Brian Komiski also told the press that AI-powered hardware, or on-device AI, will be a big trend this year, with TVs becoming the primary AI device as well as computers and smartphones.

Second, the trend of convergence between services and companies, which is changing the economic structure.

One of the main events at CES that captures the attention of businesses and the media is the Keynote Speech, which is delivered by the CEOs of leading global companies.

The CES Keynote is the first place to watch as leading companies set the stage for key topics and future visions, and introduce cutting-edge technology and product trends. Last year at CES2023, John Deere CEO John Mei became the first agricultural equipment company to deliver a keynote. His speech about change and innovation, from making plows to self-driving tractors, drew attention.

This year's CES2024 is already making waves with the announcement that, for the first time in CES history, L'Oréal CEO Nicolas Hieronimus will be the keynote speaker. L'Oréal has been attending CES for the past 10 years.

The company has been recognized for leading the trend of converging 'beauty' and 'tech' by winning the CES Innovation Award nine times. Through this keynote, L'Oréal will showcase the essence of beauty tech that fuses the offline, digital, and virtual reality worlds.

Food & Agricultural Tech, one of the main themes of CES2024, is also a representative example of convergence of cutting-edge technology with existing industries. 'Foodtech' is a combination of 'food' and 'technology' and refers to a new industrial field that combines innovative technologies such as AI, robotics, IoT, bio, and 3D printing in the food industry. 'Agtech' is a branch of foodtech that encompasses all technologies related to agricultural production and management.

CES2022 marked the first time foodtech was adopted as a technology category, and foodtech was named one of the top five technology trends. At CES2023 and CES2024, a standalone food tech pavilion (Tech West, Venetian Expo) was organized, and food and agtech was included as one of the categories for innovation awards, and related discussion sessions will be held. In terms of human security and human sustainability, including food, food and agtech still play a major role.

Third, let's look at the Human Security for All (HS4A) trend amidst the development and proliferation of advanced technologies.

Human security is a key agenda to understand the main theme of CES2024, "All On".

First proposed by the UN in 1994, the concept of 'human security' is a pan-human security view that human dignity and human peace are protected when people are free from increasing threats, diseases, and crimes in various fields such as politics, economy, and culture, and are prosperous in various aspects such as food, healthcare, environment, and safety.

Human security was one of the main agendas introduced for the first time at CES 2023, and it is expected to be a major agenda item at CES 2024, with human security as one of the new innovation award categories. In particular, 'high-tech security' was newly added as the eighth category of human security at the 78th UN General Assembly in September last year, and unlike last year's event, where the concept of human security was vague, CES2024 is emphasized with a more specific message that 'high technology should be utilized to solve the problems facing humanity'.

Along with Human Security, the Sustainability, Green Design and Smart Energy categories were the most heavily entered CES2024 Innovation Awards categories. This clearly shows that the pursuit of corporate sustainability has already become a global mega-trend, regardless of the size of the company.

Finally, let's look at Korea's position in the global innovation economy.

Of the 150+ countries participating in CES2024, Korea stands out in several ways. After the host country, the United States, and China, with over 1,000 exhibitors, Korea is the third largest with over 500 companies participating in the event. The number of participating companies and observers per capita is much higher than other countries.

The high level of innovation enthusiasm among Korean companies is reflected in their achievements. According to a survey by the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), out of the 310 CES2024 Innovation Award winners announced so far, Korean companies accounted for 143 (46%), outpacing other countries. This is a significant achievement as many Korean companies, including large corporations such as Samsung and LG, as well as new startups, have won CES Innovation Awards.

Gary Shapiro, chairman of CES organizer CTA, who visited Korea last year, said, "The topic of CES2024 is AI and Korea." He assessed Korea's status at CES. While this may be lip service from the only participating country, it's a good indication of the importance and stature of Korea at CES, the global arena of innovation.

It is a heavy lesson of history that companies and nations that innovate survive and thrive, while those that don't regress and disappear. Let's use the four viewing points of CES2024 as a telescope and microscope to go deeper into CES, and consider the future of Korea beyond individual companies.

'지구 최대의 IT쇼' CES2024가 미국 라스베가스에서 막을 올렸다. CES2024의 주전시장인 라스베가스 컨벤션센터(LVCC)를 비롯하여 전시장이 설치된 도시 전체가 전 세계에서 온 행사 참가기업 관계자들과 참관자들로 북적이고 있다. 지난해 코로나 팬데믹 이후 재개된 CES2023에 비해 금년 행사는 참가기업 기준으로는 22% 늘어난 4천개사 이상이, 참관자 기준 30% 늘어난 13만명 이상이 참여하는 '역대급 규모'로 진행될 것 같다.

1967년 뉴욕에서 시작된 CES는 초창기 TV, 냉장고, PC 등 가전제품 중심의 전시회에서 2000년대 중반 이후 정보통신기술(ICT)의 영향력이 경제사회 전반에 확산되면서 첨단 기술과 제품 중심의 전시회로 완전히 전환되었다. CES 발전역사는 인터넷과 모바일 등 첨단기술 발전의 역사이고, 글로벌기업에서부터 스타트업까지 기업 혁신의 역사를 선도하는 행사로 자리를 잡았다는 평가를 받고 있다.

CES는 참가기업 기준으로 기술 카테고리만 40여개가 넘고, 전시공간 또한 축구장 26개 이상 규모로 메인 전시장인 LVCC뿐만 아니라, 라스베가스 도심 곳곳에서 전시와 컨퍼런스가 개최된다. 일례로 현대자동차그룹의 전시장 규모가 축구장 한 개 크기이다.

때문에 첨단 기술과 제품의 모든 것을 한 자리에서 볼 수 있는 반면, 준비없이 달려들 경우 큰 비용과 시간을 들이고도 성과를 거두지 못하는 낭패를 경험할 수 있다. 현장 참관자들은 물론 CES에 관심있는 일반인들의 이해를 돕기위해 CES를 주최하는 미국소비자기술협회(CTA)가 행사 개최 하루 전 미디어데이에서 발표한 '2024 테크 트렌드'를 중심으로 이번 CES2024의 핵심 관전 포인트를 네 가지로 정리해 보았다.

첫째, 산업 전반에 걸친 AI(Artificial Intelligence)의 확산 트렌드를 살펴보자. 1950년대 미국에서 시작된 인공지능의 역사는 2022년 11월 챗GPT 등장으로 전혀 새로운 국면이 전개되고 있다. 앞으로 인공지능의 역사는 챗GPT 등장 이전과 이후로 새롭게 나눠질 것이다.

이러한 흐름의 연속선 상에서 CES 2024의 주요 기술 분야 중 AI가 집중 조명될 것이다. 미디어데이 행사에서 CTA측은 “산업 인프라, 모빌리티, 디지털 헬스케어, 지속가능성, 스마트홈 등 전 산업에서 드러나는 ‘AI의 발전’이 CES2024의  최대 화두가 될 것”이라고 말했다. 또한 거의 '모든 전시부스'에서 AI 기술을 목격하게 될 것이라고 AI 확산의 흐름을 짚어주었다.

최근 인공지능 기술 및 산업을 주도하고 있는 생성형AI는 거대한 AI 생태계의 한 부분에 불과하다. CTA측은 CES2024를 시작으로 금년은 더 넓은 AI 생태계가 제공하는 많은 것들을 이용자들이 발견하는 해가 될 것이라고 설명하였다. CTA의 브라이언 코미스키 이사 또한 언론 인터뷰를 통해 AI가 장착된 하드웨어, 즉 온디바이스(Ondevice) AI가 올 해 대세가 될 것이며, 컴퓨터나 스마트폰 못지않게 TV가 주요 AI 기기로 떠오를 것이라고 전망하였다.

둘째, 경제구조를 바꾸는 서비스 및 기업 간 결합과 융합(Convergence) 트렌드를 보자. CES 행사 중 기업과 언론의 이목을 사로잡는 메인 이벤트가 바로 글로벌기업을 이끄는 CEO들이 나서는 기조연설(Keynote Speech)이다. CES 기조연설은 유력 기업인들이 주요 화두와 향후 비전을 제시하고 최첨단 기술 및 제품 동향을 소개하는 무대로 가장 먼저 주목해야 할 대상이다.

지난해 CES2023에서 농기계 회사 최초로 존디어의 CEO 존메이가 기조연설을 해서 화제가 되었다. 쟁기를 만들던 회사가 자율주행 트랙터를 만들기까지 변화와 혁신을 소재로 연설하여 이목을 집중시켰다.

올 해 CES2024에서는 CES 역사상 최초로 세계적 화장품 제조사 로레알의 CEO 이에로니무스가 기조연설자로 정해지면서 벌써부터 큰 화제가 되고 있다.

로레알은 지난 10년간 CES에 꾸준하게 참가했다. 그 가운데 총 9번 CES 혁신상을 수상할 정도로 ‘뷰티’와 ‘테크’ 융합 트렌드를 선도해왔다는 평가를 받는 기업이다. 이번 기조연설을 통해 로레알은 오프라인 뿐만 아니라 디지털, 가상현실 세계를 융합한 뷰티테크의 정수를 보여줄 예정이라고 밝혔다.

CES2024의 메인 테마 중 하나인 푸드ㆍ애그테크(Food & Agricultural Tech)  또한 기존 산업에 첨단기술을 접목시킨 대표적 융합사례이다. ‘푸드테크’란 음식(Food)과 기술(Technology)의 합성어로 식품산업에 AI, 로봇, IoT, 바이오, 3D프린팅과 같은 혁신기술이 접목된 신산업 분야를 의미한다. ‘애그테크’는 푸드테크의 한 영역으로 농업 생산이나 관리와 관련된 기술을 모두 포괄하는 용어이다.

CES2022에서 최초로 푸드테크가 기술 카테고리로 채택되었고, 5대 기술 트렌드 중 하나로 푸드테크가 선정되었다. CES2023에 이어 CES2024에서도 푸드테크 독립 전시관(Tech West, Venetian Expo)이 구성되었으며, 혁신상 카테고리 중 하나로 푸드·애그테크가 포함되었고, 관련 토론 세션도 진행될 예정이다. 식량 등 인간안보와 인류의 지속가능성이라는 측면에서 푸드ㆍ애그테크는 여전히 큰 비중을 차지하고 있다.

셋째, 첨단 기술의 발전과 확산 속에서 속 인간안보(Human Security for All, HS4A) 트렌드를 보자. 인간안보는 CES2024 메인 주제인 '올온(All On)'을 이해할 수 있는 핵심 아젠다이다. 1994년 UN이 최초로 제시한 ‘인간안보’ 개념은 정치·경제·문화 등 다양한 분야에서 증대되는 위협과 질병 및 범죄로부터 자유롭고, 식량∙의료∙환경∙안전 등 다방면에서 풍요로워야 인간의 존엄과 인류의 평화가 지켜진다는 범인류적 안보관이다.

인간안보는 CES2023에 처음으로 도입된 주요 아젠다 중 하나였는데 CES2024에서도 혁신상 부문 중 하나로 인간안보가 신설될 정도로 비중있는 아젠다로 다뤄질 전망이다. 특히 지난해 9월 제78차 유엔총회에서 인간안보의 8번째 분야로 ‘첨단기술안보’가 새롭게 추가되어 인간안보의 개념이 모호했던 지난해 행사와 달리 CES2024에서는 ‘인류가 직면한 문제를 해결하기 위해 첨단기술이 활용되어야 한다'는 보다 구체적인 메시지로 강조되고 있다.

인간안보와 더불어 지속가능성(Sustainability), 친환경 디자인 및 스마트 에너지 부문은 CES2024 혁신상 부문 중 가장 많은 제품이 출품된 분야였다. 이것은 기업 규모에 상관 없이 ‘기업의 지속가능성 추구’가 이미 글로벌 거대 트렌드로 자리잡았다는 사실을 분명하게 보여준다.

마지막으로 글로벌 혁신경제 속 한국의 위상을 확인해 보자. CES2024에 참여하는 150여개 국가 중 우리나라는 여러 면에서 단연 눈에 띈다. 우선 개최국인 미국, 그리고 1000여개 기업이 참가하는 중국에 이어 우리나라는 세번째로 많은 500여개 기업이 이번 행사에 참가한다. 인구 대비 참가기업 및 참관자 수가 다른 국가들보다 월등히 높다.

우리나라 기업들의 높은 혁신의 열기는 성과로 확인되고 있다. 대한무역투자진흥공사(KOTRA) 조사에 따르면 현재까지 공개된 CES2024 혁신상 수상기업 310개 중 한국 기업이 143개를 차지(46%), 다른 국가들을 압도하였다. 삼성과 LG 등 대기업뿐만 아니라 신생 스타트업까지 다수의 국내기업들이 CES 혁신상을 수상했기 때문에 더욱값진 성과라고 할 수 있다.

지난해 한국을 방문한 CES 주최사 CTA의 개리 샤피로 회장은 "CES2024의 화두는 AI와 한국이다"는 말로 CES 속 한국의 위상을 평가하였다. 참가국 중 유일하게 한국을 찾은 그의 립서비스일 수 있지만, 글로벌 혁신의 경연장 CES에서 한국이 차지하는 비중과 위상이 어느 정도인지 판단하는 가늠자로 삼기에 충분하다. 혁신하는 기업이나 국가는 생존하고 발전하지만, 그렇지 못한 기업과 국가는 퇴보하고 소멸한다는 것이 역사의 무거운 교훈이다. CES2024의 네 가지 관전 포인트를 망원경이자 현미경 삼아서 CES 속으로 깊게 들어가 보자. 그리고 개별 기업을 넘어 대한민국의 미래를 함께 고민해 보자.
